LABL is currently examining three lines of research.
1) Bilingualism: We are interested in how bilingual adults are influenced by their native language while listening to second language sounds and words. Our findings thus far demonstrate that the two languages within the bilingual mind interact and are inseparable.
2) Language Development: We have examined how an action-based and multi-sensory approach to language intervention that incorporates clay improves young children’s vocabulary and syntax skills. This research is led entirely by student research assistants working with young and diverse children with and without language disorders at local daycares in Queens, which has benefitted the community, and enhanced school-readiness skills.
3) Language and emotion: We are examining the relation between emotion and language in individuals with communication disorders. We ask whether negative emotions are detectable when individuals with communication disorders speak.
